The forthcoming IN Conversation with (4)… event places importance on the artists placing a chair exactly where they think their painting is best be viewed from.

This placing will be influenced by factors such as height and size of chairs, scale of paintings, placement on wall and the positioning of other works and chairs, but for this event, where THEY think the work is best viewed.

Regularly, art audiences shuffle through exhibitions like captives  made to follow chronological pathways of discovery through roping electric buzzers and cordoned off areas.  But these experiences of painting are influenced by crowd control and insurance claim considerations.

Seldom is this spectator allowed time or facility to sit down and consider the best form of reception of the efforts in front of them. How do we think we are supposed to look at painting? Can all painting be looked at the same way? Clearly there is room for opinion and debate.

However, it is also arguable that in offering an audience a total freedom allows any greater clarity in working out what they are supposed to notice.

On a practical level, simple seating is seldom available as it is probably seen as being intrusive. It is never available in front of an “important“, painting.

This event offers the spectators a rather unique invitation from the artists involved, “to sit where they think the painting is best looked at from”. This will inevitably be challenged by the participating spectators but at the very least it offers a direct contact with the painter’s thinking on the viewing of their work.

Working collaboratively on the production of an artwork arguably requires specific rules  to be laid down and roles adopted to allow decisions about the work to be  made.

These rules initially form a working understanding, perhaps a place to go back to? But what compromises are made and why?

Teamwork and collaborative working is regularly the norm in the wider fields of the arts and so the discussions will focus on the work  produced for the event to consider the implications of collaborative thinking and selection.

The discussion further aims to consider where compromise and restriction takes place through censorship and self-censorship in it’s production.

What rules of censorship are applied to images and style?

What is the form of their construction?

How does style censor?

Do images offend?

What images are allowable and what are not?

Is censorship inevitable?

Are forms of self-censorship inevitable?

What approaches to art language become important in dealing with perceptions of censorship and self-censorship without becoming self-censoring obstacles themselves?

THOTS:IN COLOUSets and series of abstract paintings demonstrating various approaches to linking colours with forms.

-considers the thoughts required in every act and mark in the production of a painting.

The paintings investigate manner, style and taste to promote pleasure in engaging with serialised processes of working. This exhibition forms a sequel to 1234 THOTS…One Year of Drawing held earlier in 2013 at the Mile End Pavilion, London.

 THOTS:IN COLOUR

– introduces the initial 2000 watercolour works of the unfinished series,” Colour THOTS” started in May 2013. These watercolours are displayed  alongside other recent paintings on paper and canvasses produced over the last 5 years.

“Colour is uncontainable. It effortlessly reveals the limits of language and evades our best attempts to impose a rational order on it… To work with colour is to become acutely aware of the insufficiency of language and theory – which is both disturbing and pleasurable.”David Batchelor

THOTS:IN COLOUR

-aims to provide visual pleasures through use of bright colours with visual challenges that aim to compromise the viewer’s likes and dislikes.

The paintings follow repeated processes of production but are all different.

THOTS:IN COLOUR is Neil Ferguson’s first exhibition dedicated exclusively to painting since 1997.
